2012 Eaglepoint Ranch Mendocino Sangiovese
This vintage is not as big and bold and New World in style, but more classic Chianti Riserva. Those black cherry and licorice notes mingle with the cigar box and cellar floor qualities you might find in an Old World wine reminding you why drinking wine is so much fun. With every sip you imagine where you might be - Tuscany? or California?
93 cases bottled - SOLD OUT
The growing season in Mendocino County was fortunately not much different than in Carneros. The diurnal shifts maybe a bit more extreme, but the growing season overall was a stellar one here too. Nice long hang time ensured all the clusters ripened evenly while achieving a balance between the sugars and acidity. We were a little concerned the rains might come before picking, but we were able to pull them off just in time.
On the 3rd of October we picked about 2 tons of this delicious fruit. In the winery we sorted and destemmed them before putting them into 2 open topped Macro bins layered with dry ice for a 4 day cold soak. Once the bins were pulled out in the sun to warm up the yeasts began their work. During this natural fermentation the must was punched down 2 - 3 times a day until the wine went dry. We dumped both bins into the press and gently squeezed out some more delicious juice. All of the wine was then pumped into 50 % new French oak barrels and left to age for about 11 months.
